Whether you’re just coming out of a trial, in a storm now, or about to hit a rough patch, everyone needs encouragement sometimes. One place we can find it is in Exodus 3:14. Moses had just encountered God in the burning bush that was not consumed. God had given him his call to bring His people out of Egypt, and Moses asked God to tell him His name. “And God said unto Moses, ‘I Am That I Am.’” Now, there are three ways to look at God’s name, each revealing a little more about Him. And, when we look at His name in relation to the other names the Bible gives for God, we find a truth we can hold onto even on our darkest days.
Three Ways to See God’s Name: I Am that I Am
Emphasis on the first part: I AM that I am. He’s the God who was and is and is to come. He’s infinite, eternally constant, ever-present, never changing, self-sufficient, self-sustaining. He is.
Emphasis as a whole: I AM THAT I AM. He is Who He says He is. He’s the one and only, the name above all names. We can trust Him because He is THAT I Am.
Emphasis on the last part: I am THAT I AM. Think about all the many names for God throughout the Bible. Whatever you need, just put that need in there, and He’s THAT God.

God’s Promises to Believers
But, even when we know we have a wonderful, powerful, limitless God, sometimes when we get into trouble, our faith can start to waiver. What if He won’t answer? What if He says no to my prayer?. But, John 15:7 says, “If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.” That doesn’t say it might be done or even it probably will be done. It says as long as we are living in right relationship with God, it will be done.
But we can’t just ask God for help and not expect Him to give it. It takes faith for God to answer our prayers. Mark 9:23 says, “Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth,” and Mark 11:24 says, “Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.” God will answer our prayers when we have the faith to believe Him for it.
So, the next time you have a need, lean not on your own understanding. Remember that He is “I Am That I Am.” He is THAT God who is ready and able to answer the prayers of His children.
